Leo's emotions mix and swirl and stutter at the question. Fear and unease and anxiety, but also a longing. He doesn't really want to be alone, in the end. But he doesn't want to burden Donnie with any of this either. He doesn't want to hurt him.

Maybe he just... needs to take a few minutes to get his head on straight. Get these dumb emotions out so he can feel like normal Leo for a little bit!
