"Back when Menagerie was still new, there was a Faunus Princess that helped oversee the island and the people," Blake starts. She tucks her legs under her, knee budged up against Yang's leg. "She was in love with a human, a noble youth who she thought she could never have."

Luckily, every student in Remnant is educated about the Great War, so Blake doesn't need to give Yang a history lesson. Both her dad and her uncle are teachers; Blake's sure she knows her history.

"He was a soldier. Before he went away to war, he carved her a ring from a rare seashell, one that looked like gold in the right light." Blake idly toys with the ring, spinning it around her finger. "One day, she got word that he'd been killed. The messenger brought the ring with them, to present to the Faunus Princess as proof of death. She was so distraught that she hurled herself from the top of a cliff, and died on the beach rocks below."

She pauses, takes off the ring, and holds it out for Yang. It's patterned ivory and gold, smoother and slicker than metal.

"When I went back to Menagerie, my mom and I went spearfishing. That's when I lost the bottlecap. But when we fried up the fish, I found something weird in it-- this ring. I'm... pretty sure it's the Princess's. It's a popular story on Menagerie, but nobody ever managed to find a seashell that looked like gold."
