I. Are You Really Okay?
[Kavinsky had...slightly better clothes for the cold weather, but only because he'd been given a jacket. It was better than how he'd been before though, and he wasn't shivering quite as much.
He'd left his cuccos back at the convoy, where they could be both warmer and safer, and was trekking through the snow to look at everything. The snow, the ice, the mountain. It was one hell of a view, and the ice and fire that pulsed around the mountain weren't enough to deter him. He'd faced more frightening things than that, and he wasn't especially bothered.
At least, he wasn't until the particularly tall and gangly tree off to the side of him abruptly burst into flames with a loud crackle-snap-pop. The sound of it startled him just as much as the sudden flames, and he backed away with a yelp, quickly enough that his feet tangled together and he landed on his ass in the snow, hands sinking in from his attempt to catch himself.
Once the surprise of it had worn off, and it didn't look like the fire was going to spread to the other trees and thus become a problem, he started laughing. At himself, for being so spooked. And then, his hands sank a bit more into the snow, more than he would've expected, especially with how warm they felt. Shifting so he could pull his hands out of the snow, he immediately saw why.
His hands, both of them, were partially translucent and glowing a warm red-gold-orange, similarly colored little flames licking along his fingers. He turned them over to look at the backs, then back over to inspect his palms, then tentatively pushed up one of the jacket sleeves. It didn't catch fire, didn't even singe, and that was one thing he didn't have to worry about then, but more importantly- the semi-translucent effect that had consumed both his hands also spread halfway up his forearms, blending to regular pale skin midway to his elbows.]
Huh.
[Maybe he should have been more alarmed about this change than he was, but after the things he'd seen here already, and a lifetime of weird and unexpected things, he just couldn't bring himself to worry. Especially when it didn't hurt and it didn't seem like he was going to set everything on fire just by poking a finger against it or whatever.
He was still sitting there when he heard the crunching of footsteps in the snow (or some other noise that caught his attention), and immediately looked up, hands held out in front of him from his inspection still.]
I didn't do it.
[The burning tree, that was.]
For once in my life, I can say that something on fire isn't my fault.
II. See What's On The Inside
[After getting used to the fact that his hands were now always on fire--or maybe it was more accurate to say they were fire--Kavinsky went right back to exploring the area around the convoy. Of course 'getting used to' meant he still flinched every now and then when he raised one of his hands to touch his face or mess with his hair. He knew that the fire wasn't going to burn him, but that didn't stop the little knee-jerk primal reaction of 'oh shit, fire' just yet. It was a work in progress.
It helped that there was so much to see, and that he had to be cautious so he wouldn't end up buried under snow or...whatever might happen in this place. He wasn't sure spontaneous avalanche was on the schedule here, but he didn't want to tempt that sort of fate. So instead he followed alongside one of the rivers that had frozen, curious if it would lead anywhere interesting.
He tried to stay on the snow rather than walking on the ice itself--he knew from past experience how fucking slippery ice was--but that only worked when there wasn't snow on the ice. When the slippening happened, he had a split second where he realized he'd stepped in the wrong spot, but there wasn't enough time to correct that misstep. He was just aware of it right before his feet slid out from under him and he went down, tailbone meeting ice. One hand, the one he'd attempted to catch himself with, punched through the thin ice at the edge of the river, which might have been better than the alternative as it did him less harm. However-]
Fucking bitch.
[He yanked his hand out of the water, shaking it vigorously. The sleeve of his jacket had gotten soaked up past his wrist, and he wrestled free of it so he wouldn't set it on fire when he broke out the actual flames, cupping them in his hands. Getting the fire working the way he wanted it to wasn't always easy, but when it was more instinct than anything else, when he wasn't trying too hard--like now--it just happened.
It was a fast way to warm up his hands and burn off the ice water, at least where the flames were closest. Once his fingers had stopped shaking, he put out the flames and used the bottom edge of his shirt to dry his wrist. With his shirt lifted like that, there were scales visible on his stomach, a similar red-gold-orange color to his hands. The scales hadn't been there earlier though, and he didn't even notice, too busy focusing on other things. But the scales were in a narrow line down his stomach from his navel, continuing down out of sight under the waistband of his jeans, though they gave the impression, with what was visible, that they spread out towards his hips. More scales, just as shiny and eye-catching, were visible at the bottom of his ribs, where they disappeared upward under his shirt.
He could be found there, either still drying his arm, or trying to wring the excess water from the jack sleeve that had gotten drenched, having moved over slightly so he was sitting in the snow rather than on the ice. It was...a bit more comfortable for his potentially bruised tailbone.]

The winds stirred with him as he flew, creating gusts that swirled after him. He'd been holding off of flying too often out here but now all he wanted to do was be somewhere else, and the skies were always the easiest retreat. The cold helped cool his temper, being in a more natural environment calmed his swirling thoughts as more feral instincts nipped away at that tangled ball of emotions.
It was the spark of color down below that caught his attention, something that signaled both danger and warmth, but curiosity won over both as the harpy-turtle found himself spiraling down from the skies for a closer look. A singular tree on fire was certainly a concern, but it remained burning like a lone torch in a sea of white. Another glow against the whiteness drew his attention, a person- a familiar figure, in fact.
Donnie landed on a snowy branch of a nearby tree across from the burning spectacle, looking at Kavinsky as the guy claimed innocence. He would have responded with something snappy but he's still struggling to separate the harpy from the turtle mind.]
no subject
Hey, man. You came to the right place if you want to warm up a little.
[As if Kavinsky had any control over what was happening with that burning tree. But actually-
He looked down at his hands again, then at the tree, then pushed himself to his feet.]
I've never tried to do shit with fire I didn't make myself, yet. But I might be able to keep that from spreading.
[He was absolutely less concerned with the fire spreading and much more interested and curious about his own potential ability to control fire like that.]
no subject
Spontaneous combustion?
[Kavinsky had said the thing hadn't been his fault, although the hands were definitely a new feature.]
Waaait, so you're not just a pyromaniac at heart..?
no subject
[And none of it had been his fault. Though honestly...if he'd managed to make a whole tree burst into flames, he'd be damned proud of it. He'd own it, rather than denying it.
He grinned.]
Not anymore. I'm not just a pyromaniac at heart; I've been doin' fire shit since--fuck, since a little after when we'd first met. It's been a little hit or miss.
[He had not, at least, set anything catastrophic on fire. Yet. So he was going to consider that a win.]
I don't know what this is about. [Holding up his semi-translucent hands, he wiggled his equally semi-translucent fingers.] But it looks cool and it doesn't hurt. And I can do this-
[This was a little flame sparking to life in the palm of his hand, dancing this way and that before he curled his fingers over it and extinguished it.]
So I figure...maybe I can do that to the tree.
no subject
[Finally the turtle-harpy did drop down onto the snow, keeping his tail close and his wings tucked over his bare shoulders as he wandered over by Kavinsky so he could get a better look at those hands.]
Probably a new standard feature if the fire's been sticking. Oh, that is a neat trick.
[And the brief warmth was nice too, but now he could feel the heat from the tree even better.]
Well, better to work the bugs out sooner than later, right? If it's not looking like it's working out, I think I can help out. Just give me a head's up.
no subject
That was kind of what I'd been thinking.
[That the fire was a new standard feature. Kavinsky was doing pretty good at taking it all in stride, and while this might not be the weirdest thing he'd ever experienced, it was definitely on the top five list.]
Exactly. And the tree's already on fire, so it's not like I could hurt it more.
[He could just...damage the trees around it. Or them, if he was especially unlucky. He didn't think his luck would be that bad, though.
He still had no idea what he was doing, so the fact Donnie could lend a hand if things got bad was something of a relief. Not that he'd been super worried to begin with...but it never hurt to have a back up plan.
Like. Did he just look at the fire and think real hard in its direction? It was different when it wasn't fire he was creating himself. That he had some idea of what to do about. But here... thinking real hard in the fire's direction didn't seem to do much, so he reached out a hand towards it--
The response was immediate, flames leaping from the branches of the tree and arcing towards him. Though he flinched, he didn't move a step, just let the fire swirl around his hand. Raising his other hand had the same effect, almost like the fire was acting on its own rather than him pulling it to him. And right now? He wasn't sure if that was really that inaccurate. He was sure he was a factor in the equation, but it was more subconscious.]
I...could get used to this.
[It made him feel strong in a way he wasn't used to. He liked it.]
no subject
But the flames stopped, and for a moment he ignored the cold seeping into his cargo pants as he sat there staring at the flames wreathing Kavinsky's hands.]
Oh, cool...
[It was mesmerizing. Fire looked so much cooler but that was because you couldn't really see wind, just what it affected.]
no subject
He couldn't stop himself from laughing when Donnie backpedaled from the fire, but it wasn't unkind laughter. K would've done something similar, in the same situation.]
Sorry, man. Didn't know what was gonna happen, else I would've said something.
[He turned his hands over, then again, watching the flames. The tree continued to burn, but a lot of the fire had been pulled to Kavinsky, and he focused on those, curling them up his arms like snakes. The harder part, it turned out, was extinguishing the flames once he had them. Huh.]
Hey, so. What was the idea if the fire gets out of control?
[No reason. Just curious.]
no subject
I'm just glad it didn't end up pulling a giant fireball at us.
[His tail whipped behind him, flicking off more snow, but his attention slid back towards Kavinsky as he watched the flames move. Fascinating..!]
Huh? Oh, well I have found myself able to control the wind, so I can probably disperse it or smother it by creating a vacuum. Although I'm not sure how compactly I can manage such.
no subject
[Because it'd been him, something he'd done, that had pulled the flames from the tree. He didn't know if a fireball would've hurt him, but he was sure it would've hurt Donnie, and the last thing K wanted would be for someone else to become collateral because of him fucking up.]
A vacuum. Okay.
[He pulled more fire from the tree, this time aware he was doing it but not...aware of how, yet. He didn't know what the trigger was, whether it was a motion of his hand, a firm thought, an intent. It was one of those, but a tree on fire might be too big of a thing to practice figuring out the specific thing.]
So. Not compact. Which means, exactly?
no subject
He nodded.]
So like...I could contain it to the tree easily enough, but I'm not sure how well I'd be able to do something like snuff out the flames on your arms.
no subject
[And sort of what he'd been thinking, from hearing more or less 'not very compact'.]
I've got the flames on me under control, but I'm not so sure about the rest of the tree. Feels like it might be a bad idea right now to try pulling them off.
[While he wasn't afraid of fire, he didn't want to make a big scorching fireball in the snow, either. If he wasn't as fire immune as he thought he was, it'd be really fucking unpleasant. And he'd just rather not.]
I dunno if they'll spread if they're left there, but it feels wrong to not put 'em out. So, you know.
[He'd been thinking maybe Donnie could extinguish the tree. A little bit of it might be curiosity, too.]
no subject
[At least the fire helped thaw him out, although he expected that will change very soon once he took care of the tree. But leaving it to burn seemed like a bad idea. The world was a mess but no need to be careless, right?
Donnie spread his wings, hopping up as he flapped them to start curling the air around them and give him more lift.
The winds started to pick up around them, and once he was a good height, the turtle-harpy angled himself as he continued to stir the air until he could gather and shape it, pulling it into a tight funnel around the tree. It wasn't working quite as well as he was thinking it should, so rather than try quashing the flames, he drew them upwards, circling around the fiery spout as he tried to direct the funnel of flames to thinner air where he could release it.]
no subject
The flames on his arms kept moving even as he watched Donnie, curious. The winds might not have been smothering the fire as well as he'd wanted, but the resulting fire tornado was still visually impressive. Kavinsky also picked up on what his intention was--it was the same thing he would've done as a plan b, pulling them up into thinner air. Fire needed oxygen, and without it, it would die.
He tried to help a bit, too, encouraging the flames from the tree to keep moving upward, into that thinner air, while keeping them as corralled as he could. This, teamwork, collaborating with someone who could control wind, gave him more than a few sudden ideas for the future. Wind and fire went together pretty well, in the right situations.]
no subject
He drifted back down as he let the winds continue carrying the rest of the flames along with Kavinsky's coaxing, watching as the fire gutted out once it reached its limit, and soon enough the flame spectacular was over.
The winged turtle laughed as he settled back down beside Kavinsky, still looking up where the winds began to disperse.]
Heh! Not bad, right?
no subject
Nah, that was great. I didn't expect it to end up making a fire tornado, but that was fucking cool.
[He grinned, letting the fire on his arms loop around a few more times before focusing on putting the flames out. It took a bit of concentration, a slight struggle, but he got them all extinguished after a moment, leaving just his...apparently permanently semi-transparent and glowy hands.]
You know, I was thinking too. Fire and wind could probably work really well together. For...you know, whatever we'd need weaponized fire for.
[...As if fire on its own wasn't already a weapon. But with wind it could become even more of a weapon.]
no subject
[There's still an extra brightness to his eyes, a feral edge accented by his fangy grin.]
Oh, that would be pretty awesome. I mean, who doesn't need weaponized fire??
no subject
Exactly. And there's a lot of nasty shit around, so I've been told, that having a good combo like that would be really helpful against.
[A beat.]
Or you know, if it stays this fucking cold for a while longer. Melting snow and ice could be important, too.
[And maybe not just weaponizing the fire, but maybe guiding it too, in case it got away from him, or needed to be focused elsewhere quickly or... he didn't know, really, but he felt like there was a lot of potential.]
no subject
[Although yeah, now that Kavinsky mentions it, the chill's settling in again. Donnie inches a little closer as he holds his wings a little looser so his shoulders can benefit.]
Good points. I imagine you could do that with the flames entirely on its own though, once you get enough control of it. Wind might be better for either keeping it within a space or spreading it out.
no subject
[He wasn't sure he'd actually think it was fun in some kind of genuine combat situation, but for other things? Yeah, probably.]
True. I'm still working on getting to that point, though.
[And fire was something he was trying not to take chances with when it could impact other people. When he was away from people and the convoy was a different matter, though.
He also picked up on the fact Donnie was cold, and held his hands palm up, letting flames gather in them to act as a heat source.]
There are some things I'd rather not take chances with, if other people are around, you know? So a back up plan or some safety measures feel like a good idea.
[Most people back home might've thought he was violent, an asshole who didn't care about others, and while parts of that were true, he didn't want people to get hurt because of him. Not as collateral, not because he'd fucked up, not because he hadn't realized the risks or dangers of something.]
no subject
Yeah, but that's why it's better to work on things when you're not under pressure.
[The turtle sighed gratefully as Kavinsky obligingly created a portable bonfire, but he still maintained some space between them.]
As someone who spends a lot of time with backup plans I completely understand this. One can never be too careful.
no subject
[Unless 'keeping calm under pressure' was the goal that was being worked on. But otherwise? Making someone feel rushed or obligated or...like they couldn't make a mistake, typically wasn't beneficial. At least, it'd never been beneficial for his dreaming. He'd always learned the most when it didn't matter how many times he screwed up. Having time to figure out what did and didn't work for a process was the best way to learn.]
I feel like not having a back up plan for some shit would be a terrible idea. Gotta have some sort of plan for what you'll do if things go south.
[Like his back up plans for when dreaming went awry. That was the most important part of all the things he might make back up plans for; making sure no one else, or himself, was hurt by his dreams.]
no subject
-not that it didn't work, I mean it did get us to focus.
[They had been pressed for time too, otherwise Donnie's sure there would have been actual lessons involved, and more importantly, more time spent with Gram-Gram. He waves the thought away.]
So yeah, if you have the time and opportunity, I'd say make the most of it. And fireplay seems a lot better to do out surrounded by snow than somewhere dry, I'll give it that.
no subject
That sounds like either the world's worst idea...or a fucking fantastic one.
[Or maybe a little of both. But sometimes, it took something like that if someone was pressed for time. Survival instincts were a hell of a thing, after all.]
Glad it worked out for you, though.
[Genuinely! He was.]
I've seen enough collateral that I'd like to be cautious with all this fire. When I can.
[He'd save fucking around for when he wouldn't be at risk of setting various important things and/or people on fire. That sort of thing wasn't his idea of fun; most of the risks he took only put himself in danger.]
And the snow does seem pretty great for that. Practicing, I mean.
no subject
[He gestures around them.]
Well, if you want to continue with that, we're already out here, and at least with your fire I won't be completely freezing. [He smiles crookedly at that.]
